Certified Nutrition Coach

ESI’s certified Nutrition Coaches help our wellness Members reach their goals, whether the goals are simply to lose 10 pounds or to make substantial behavior changes to deal with diabetes or heart disease. Members work one-to-one with a Certified Nutrition Coach and have access to Behavioral Health Clinicians as well. The Coach helps the Member to complete an initial assessment, to establish goals, and to develop a workable dietary and nutrition plan.

When appropriate, the Coach makes referrals to adjunct services such as medical screenings and fitness resources. The Coach also provides ongoing follow-up, coaching and encouragement to help the Member take control of his or her eating habits.

No quick tricks to a healthier lifestyle

If you are looking to lose weight, you are not alone. Every year, more than 100 million dieters turn to the $20 billion diet industry to shed pounds. There’s no shortage of fad diets, celebrity diets, pills, nutritional supplements, exercise equipment, books, videos and plans offering weight loss promises. Studies show that boomerang diets don’t work and can often be dangerous.

Research shows that there are no quick tricks to weight loss and healthier nutrition, but our Nutrition Coaches are expert at helping Members tailor custom plans focusing on small, incremental, achievable steps working to a longer goal. Our coaches understand the challenges and obstacles of a busy life style, on-the-go dining, and the proliferation of processed foods, snack foods and unhealthy choices in our daily lives. Nutrition coaching provides the education and support to learn healthy and unhealthy choices and to develop healthy eating patterns focused on a good balance of nutrient-dense, energy-boosting foods. The focus is on long-term change rather than quick fixes.

Learning healthy nutrition and balanced diet habits helps Members to maintain a healthy weight and lower their risk of life-limiting illnesses such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. A balanced diet can also boost energy by keeping blood sugar levels on an even keel.

Obesity and overweight facts from the CDC

The Centers of Disease Control (CDC) characterizes obesity as epidemic in the U.S. today. They offer some startling statistics on the conditions of obesity and overweight:

  • More than one-third are obese. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
  • More than 70% of adults over the age of 20 are overweight, defined as a BMI of 25 or higher
  • Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
  • Medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.
